Tuchel Questions Home Crowd Support Following Comfortable Win Over Wales.
Thomas Tuchel voiced his disappointment that the England team did not get more support from the Wembley fans during their commanding triumph over Wales on Thursday evening.
The manager was happy to see his squad showcase their winning momentum, with goals from Rogers, Ollie Watkins, and Bukayo Saka inside the opening quarter effectively ending the game. However, he was displeased with the mood at the iconic venue.
“With one and a half training days to get ready against a drilled team and we performed excellently,” Tuchel remarked. “It could have been 5-0 up at the break. We missed the additional goals. There was little noise. We didn’t get any energy back from the crowd. Our team gave their all to win.”
“What more can you give in the first quarter? We prevented them get away. If you hear just Wales fans for 30 minutes, it’s sad because the squad deserved better encouragement today.”
“I maintain my words. There’s nothing more than being three goals up in a derby. I hoped for a little more support in moments where it is challenging.”
“In the second half, to support us, there was excessive support for Wales. It could have helped us to refocus, but it is what it is and so be it.”
Squad Decisions Justified by Display
Apart from risking a fight with supporters, Tuchel also raised eyebrows by leaving out Bellingham and Phil Foden from his team selection. Yet the choice was justified by Morgan Rogers impressing again in the attacking midfield role and scoring his first international goal.
“That’s his style,” Tuchel explained. “He is a No 10 and he is competing for his place.”
Wales Manager Hopes for Improvement from Defeat
The Wales manager hopes that his team, who host a strong Belgian side in a crucial qualifying match on next week, learn from their poor first-half display.
“That’s the reason I wanted this friendly,” Bellamy stated. “I need to see where we are. What are our ambitions? Who do we want to be? This performance fills me with motivation.”
Fitness Worry for Watkins
Watkins was withdrawn at half-time after hitting a post and may miss out when England face Latvia in the Latvian capital in a World Cup qualifying match on Tuesday.
