Trump along with Japan's Recently Appointed Prime Minister Share Compliments and Commit to Reinforce ‘Extraordinary’ Relationship
In the course of a latest trip to Japan's capital, ex- American leader Trump and the Japanese new Premier Takaichi shared friendly compliments and pledged to strengthen the currently strong bilateral ties.
Key Points from the Encounter
Trump praised Takaichi as a ‘great’ figure and congratulated her on assuming the role of Japan's first woman premier. In their discussions at Tokyo's Akasaka Palace, Trump expressed optimism that Takaichi would become one of the ‘great prime ministers’ of Japan.
Takaichi, who is a protégée of late Japanese leader Shinzo Abe, applauded his efforts to address international disputes and according to sources vowed to nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Economic and Defense Deals
The two nations announced a series of joint initiatives in sectors such as energy, AI, and critical minerals. Japanese companies are considering funding of up to $400bn in the US.
Furthermore, Tokyo had earlier committed $550bn in long-term American projects, loans, and assurances as part of an agreement to secure exemption from the former president's import duties.
These actions are viewed as possibly reducing any future requests from the US side for Tokyo to boost its military spending. The prime minister addressed this by promising to fast-track proposals to raise defense spending to 2% of GDP.
