A man, eventually detained for reportedly attacking police officers with a deli product, interacts with customs and FBI agents.

A federal customs official has testified he could sense through his ballistic vest the impact of a deli item launched at him by a capital city activist, who has gone on trial for assault.

Immigration and customs agent the officer testified to the jury the food item "exploded all over him" and he "detected the vegetables and yellow sauce" on his uniform.

Both legal teams challenges that Sean Dunn, in his thirties, did in fact lob vulgar language and a made-to-order snack at officers assigned by President Donald Trump to secure the federal district in August.

The occurrence was recorded on recording and spread across the internet, making the defendant a representation of dissent in Washington DC to the administration.

Federal attorneys originally tried to obtain major offense allegations against Mr Dunn, but a judicial committee chose not to charge him.

The former president's assignment of National Guard troops to Washington DC this summer generated protest from some of the city's residents, who saw it as a political use of the armed forces.

Based on legal filings, Mr Dunn came near a police contingent at about 11 PM on the summer date, describing them "authoritarians" and yelling: "Why are you here? Your presence is unwanted in my city!"

The trial saw a reenactment from Mr Lairmore on the court date as he testified against the accused.

"I detected it through my protective gear," he said of the sandwich's impact, mentioning that an onion string hung from his communication device and condiment stained his uniform.

The accused's legal counsel, the defense attorney, stated in her initial argument that launching the food item was a "non-threatening act that did not, could not, create physical damage".

But state lawyer John Parron said Mr Dunn must be held accountable.

"Regardless of identity, you should not hurling objects at others because you're mad," the prosecutor declared.

Following the alleged assault became public, the accused was dismissed from his job as a paralegal in the Department of Justice.
